At Long Last- A Completed Scarf

Not long ago, I was looking for something in a closet and I came across an abandoned knitting project. It was a scarf that was just about finished, but I couldn't remember what stitch pattern I had been using. I decided to finish it the way it was, so I casted off, even though it should have had a bit more length. A loopy crocheted edging on both ends added a finishing touch. I'll have a new scarf to keep my neck warm next winter. I don't know why I always get sidetracked and leave things not quite completed. Oh well, most of them get finished eventually.

Making A Knitted Blanket

I've been working on this knitted blanket since December. I'll keep adding more squares until it fits the top of a single bed. A person in one of the Facebook scrap quilting groups showed me how to make it. The squares are knit together, that's what I liked about it. Start with 10 stitches, knit 20 rows. Add the next colour, pick up 10 stitches along the side, knit 20 rows. When joining to a block, pick up a stitch, then knit 2 together the next row so there are always 10 stitches on the needle. When I first saw the instructions, I was confused until I picked up the needles and started, then it made sense. It's kind of ugly, but charming at the same time, haha! Originally, I was going to use scrap yarn that I had around here, but I didn't like the texture of it. I bought several balls of Paton's Canadiana, which is soft and lovely. Some of the yukky yarn is in the blanket, but I can't pick it out now.

The Start Of A Mitten

I'm attempting to make a pair of mittens, something I've never done before. I didn't bother making a sample and measuring the gauge, shame on me. I'm using two kinds of yarn, the multicoloured one is silk, wool and nylon. The plain yarn is 100% wool. It seems to fit ok so far, wish me luck!

Starting A New Scarf

I like to have a knitting or crocheting project on the go, all my other projects have been completed. Too bad I can't say the same about my unfinished quilts! I found some nice yarn in a local store, then went home to look for a pattern in this book that I've had since the early 70s. It's interesting how the variegated yarn makes it dark on one side and light on the other.

Scarf

This was gifted today so I can show some pictures of the scarf I made for my daughter, Lindsay. I had some nice yarn that I bought in Haines, Alaska, I wanted to try the fan and feather pattern, My mom always made afghans using that pattern. I just about had smoke coming out of my ears trying to figure out how to do it. I ripped it out 6 times before the penny finally dropped. There were only two balls of yarn, I kept going until it was used up. Lindsay said she liked it. :)

Throwback Thursday; Corking Spool

This was another item that was in the "time capsule" that Mom put away for me. I did miles of tube knitting on this wooden corking spool. These days, it's referred to as spool knitting.

A Sock

I made my very first sock when I was at the cabin. I'll have to wait to make the second one because I had a carpal tunnel flare-up. For some reason, knitting bothers my left hand and wrist but crocheting seems to be ok. When I start knitting again, I'll just do a bit at a time, then it won't make my hand go numb.

Vacation Time 2016

I'm getting ready to go to my summer cabin in the Yukon. A few things I'll be doing are: reading and attempting to knit a pair of socks. I've never made socks before, so it might be a challenge. There is no electricity, plumbing, internet or cell service at the cabin, it's like going back in time. Hopefully, the socks will turn out and I'll be able to post a picture of them when I get back. :)

Throwback Thursday; Mom's Knitting Needles

Last week someone from work said that she would like to learn to knit, I told her that I could help her, but I realized that I haven't knit anything for more than twenty years, would I still know how? I saw a free dishcloth pattern on Craftsy, so I thought I would try it to brush up on my skills , then be able to help my friend. I went to look for knitting needles, but couldn't find them, I forgot that I let my daughter have them. I thought for a bit, then remembered that I had my mom's knitting needle collection here somewhere. I found the needles in a dresser that used to belong to her. It seems the motion of knitting idles somewhere in the brain because it all came back to me when I started the dishcloth pattern. I added ten more stitches to make the dishcloth a little bigger. Mom has been gone for just about five years now, I really miss her, but I'm happy to say, her knitting needles are clicking away once again. I don't know how old these needles are, but I think they must be from several decades ago.
