Finished Just In Time For Halloween

I completed this Halloween quilt the other day. It's made up of odds and ends of Halloween fabric that I had in my stash. There wasn't a pattern for it, I alternated a Pinwheel block with a Four-Patch block. This one will go on the back of the couch for the rest of October.

Placemats By Linda H.

Linda recently made these lovely batik placemats and matching potholders. This is what Linda said about them, "The idea for the place mats came from Sunday Brunch by Susan Purney Mark in a McCall's Quilting magazine called America Loves Scrap Quilts Winter 2011/2012. I am making use of my huge collection of older magazines and books and also my getting older collection of batiks. The potholders were not featured in the pattern but I didn't want to waste the trimmings left from making the place mats."

I Received A Beautiful Gift

My friend, Doreen Kelley crocheted this beautiful blanket for me. Last year, I had given her a set of Yukon Tartan coasters that I bought at a gift shop in Whitehorse. Doreen is interested in tartans and had designed one for the town where we live. She examined the coasters and figured out the thread count, colours and design, then proceeded to make a blanket. It's a combination of crochet and weaving. It says on the description of the tartan, "Each colour reflects our unique territory. Light blue symbolizes lakes, skies and rivers. Purple is for the mountains. Magenta, the fireweed. Green, the forest. Solid yellow, the midnight sun and broken yellow, the Klondike gold. The original tartan design was by Janet Couture in 1984." We go to our cabin in the Yukon every summer, so this blanket is really special to me, I absolutely love it!

A Small Quilt Top

I made these blocks into a small quilt top. I had reached my limit of leftover pieces and scraps, so this is how big it's going to be. It will be a good size for a lap quilt to donate.

A Few Blocks

We only have a few more weeks here at the off-grid cabin in the Yukon. I finished the quilt top I was working on, so now I'm sewing some blocks from leftover pieces that i had cut. These ones will probably turn into a donation quilt at some point.

Quilt Top Is Finished

After much picking out and rearranging, this quilt top is done. I kept finding blocks that I didn't like, so I changed them. I'll will give it a good press with a steam iron when I get back home. All I have at the cabin is a little travel iron. Now I have nothing left to sew, maybe I'll make some blocks from odds and ends.

Garage Sale Find

I went to a garage sale recently and found this sewing supply box for five bucks. It comes in handy at the cabin because I don't have any drawers, shelves or cupboards in my little sewing corner. I had to buy a Rubbermaid bin for the scrap fabric and stash it under the cabin. Now the area looks a little tidier.

Autumn #12 By Linda H.

This is what Linda said about her quilt, "I'm calling this Autumn No. 12. Pretty sure that I have made at least 11 other quilts or even table runners withe the fall colours before this. Some are not yet quilted but I will work on finishing my unfinished objects! 😳" Linda didn't have enough fabric for the backing, so she enlarged it by adding a row of Maple Leaf blocks. I think it looks fantastic!

The Start Of A New Quilt

We are at our summer cabin in the Yukon. Each year, I work on a quilt top, this time I'm making a scrappy one. There isn't a fabric stash here, so I brought a couple of big bags of cut 2 1/2" X 4 1/2" pieces. This is what I've done so far. I better not sew too fast or I'll have the quilt top done before the summer is over and I'll have nothing else to do.

Bob And Weave By Linda H.

This is what Linda said about her " Bob and Weave" quilt, "The pattern was from the book Strip Your Stash by Gudrun Erla." I really like this quilt, the pattern is interesting. It looks like it would be fun to make. :)

This One Doesn't Have A Name

I saw a picture of a quilt similar to this and decided to make one like it. There is no pattern, just a random size triangle sewn on to the bottom corner of each square. I raided my bin of five inch squares that I've been cutting for the past 25 years for the light colours. There wasn't enough of the light blue fabric for the back, so I added a strip of something else on one side.

Rail Fence By Linda H.

Linda recently finished this lovely quilt. This is what she said about it, "This is the Rail Fence quilt made of red, pink, orange and yellow scraps. The pattern came from "No Scrap Left Behind" by Amanda Jean Nyberg. It was called Scrap Happy Rails. The colours are actually brighter than the photo would indicate." Rail Fence is one of my favourite quilt designs. Linda did a great job!

Stash Buster 2025 Is Quilted And Bound

I belong to a Stash Buster Facebook group. Every year they host a Stash Buster challenge where they pick a block pattern and everyone makes their version of a quilt with it. The deadline is December 31 to have the top completed, mine was done before that. It took some time to quilt, though, because I ruler quilted it with Baptist Fans. The wide backing fabric came from Connecting Threads. I wish I could have an entire bolt of it, I love the newspaper print design.

Chicken Quilt By Linda H.

Linda recently finished this delightful chicken quilt. This is what Linda said about it, "The block is modified from the one in Doodle-Doo By Palmer Bixler in Quilter's World Late Spring 2025. I ran out of fabric for the nests so some chickens are standing. (Richard says they are wearing yellow gumboots)!" Also included is a picture of a funny block with the beak not connected to the body. We all had a chuckle about it, then Linda fixed it. :D

UFO From 2014 Completed

This was a mystery quilt, "Grand Illusion" in 2014 hosted by Bonnie Hunter. I hadn't done one of Bonnie Hunter's mystery quilts before, she does a different one every year. From now on, I'll wait until seeing the reveal before making one again. All of her other ones looked fantastic. Don't get me wrong, I love Bonnie Hunter's quilts and patterns! When the fabric requirements were given, I went out and bought several pinks and aquas because I didn't have those colours in my stash. The rest of the colours I had in plentiful supply. This turned out to not be my favourite quilt. I made most of the blocks and then shoved them away in a box. Years later, I sewed them into a quilt top. Because I hadn't made all the blocks that were required, the top didn't look right on a bed. It was wide enough but not long enough. It was hung up in the quilt top closet for a few more years. One day I hauled it out and wondered what to do with it. I had a brainwave- take a row of blocks off one side and sew it to the bottom. Then the top was long enough but too narrow. I solved the problem by adding a wide border on each side. I certainly wasn't going to make any more blocks because I didn't really enjoy making the existing ones. So now the quilt is completed and I didn't waste all the work that went into making the blocks. One of the reasons I didn't care for this one is, the eyes don't have a place to rest, it's so busy, almost chaotic. Oh well, live and learn.
